Harvard Gate

Enter to grow in wisdom.
Depart to serve better thy country and thy kind.

-- Charles W. Eliot, President of Harvard University, Class of 1853.

Crimsons know these two sentences by heart.

With humility, we accepted the truth of the first statement, which is carved in stone on Dexter Gate, when we took our first steps into the Yard to officially begin our life at Harvard.

As we departed from Harvard Yard at the end of our Commencement Exercises, we reflected on the second statement, also carved in stone on the same gate, in awe and, for some perhaps, a little trepidation, wondering if we can indeed live up to President Eliot’s exhortation.

It is in that spirit that the Harvard Club of Singapore has established two award programmes to give credence to Harvard’s tradition of service to improving our community.
