Disrupting with Integrity: A Harvard Case Comes to Life
What drives someone to leave a secure, high-flying career to take on one of the hardest problems in one of the least understood markets—and try to build something entirely new?
20 August 2025
6:15 PM - 9:00 PM
Tanglin Club
2 Stevens Road, Singapore
Join us for an evening of insight and inspiration as part of the August Alumnus Series, co-hosted by the Harvard Club of Singapore and the HBS Club of Singapore. We’re proud to feature Duncan van Bergen (MBA ’03), co-founder of Calyx Global, in conversation with HBS Professor Mike Toffel—who authored the case study on Duncan now taught in classrooms at HBS.
This won’t be just a story about carbon credits. It’s about values in action:
-
How do you build trust when the world around you hasn’t quite figured out the rules?
-
Can you grow a business and still protect your principles?
-
What does it take to walk away from comfort and toward contribution?
Through Duncan’s journey—from corporate leadership into the unknown—we’ll explore how seeing the world through a different lens can open unexpected doors. We’ll talk about building organizations that do good and do well, confronting conflicts of interest with courage, and why integrity still matters, even when the stakes are high.
Following the conversation, Daniel Lee, Associate Professor (Practice) in Carbon Markets at Nanyang Business School, NTU and a seasoned practitioner who’s spent nearly two decades shaping climate finance and policy, will guide an interactive case discussion—bringing attendees into the conversation and the dilemmas at its heart.
